East Brisbane State School Relocation Program
The findings of the 60-day Sports Venue Review (Sport Venue Review) of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Master Plan were published on 18 March 2024.
The Sport Venue Review recommended that the proposed rebuild of the Gabba be cancelled and that a new stadium be built at Victoria Park, and following this the Gabba be demolished and the site repurposed. However, the report acknowledges that if the Gabba is retained substantial upgrades would be required to bring it up to modern standards.
The State Government has announced that while the Gabba rebuild will not proceed, it does not support the proposal to build a new stadium in Victoria Park and instead will proceed with a modest enhancement of the Gabba.
The Department of State Development and Infrastructure (DSDI) has informed the Department of Education that East Brisbane State School (SS) will not be required to relocate at the end of 2025 school year.
The Department will continue to work with DSDI to understand the future proposals for the Gabba and what this means for the East Brisbane State School.
As plans for the Gabba are developed, the Department will confirm how this impacts East Brisbane State School at the current location, given the known constraints of the site in providing for the future needs of the catchment.
The teaching and learning outcomes of East Brisbane SS remain the Department’s highest priority. Accordingly, should the modest enhancement of the Gabba unduly impact safety, wellbeing and educational outcomes, the Department will seek to relocate the school either temporarily or permanently.
While a relocation to the Coorparoo Secondary College (SC) remains an option, this will not proceed for the 2026 school year. With the additional time now available, the Department will reconsider alternative sites within the existing catchment, including remaining in the current location.
The proposed upgrades and refurbishments to Coorparoo SC as well as the relocation of Brisbane School of Distance Education (SDE), will also be revisited given the outcomes of the review. More information will be shared with school communities as it becomes available.
The Department will continue to consult with the staff and communities of the East Brisbane SS, Coorparoo SC and Brisbane SDE as the outcomes of the review are considered and future plans for each school are confirmed.
